Mental Health And Vitamin B12 Go Hand In Hand

by Mandy Fain

The brain needs to metabolize neurotransmitters, and to do this it produces S- adenosylmethionine, for which B12 is a very important part of production. It can then be seen how vitamin B12 deficiencies could contribute to a wide array of mental health problems like depression, demyelinating myelopathy and dementia or Alzheimer's.
Norepinephrine is an essential neurotransmitter for maintaining a positive mood, and those who are deficient in B12 have shown to be more prone to depression and other neuropsychiatric symptoms. Diseases such as pernicious anemia and dementia, which are most common in the elderly, have also been linked to B12 deficiencies. A book by Syd Baumel called "A Shot in Time Saves Mind" discusses the possibility that patients suffering depression often have difficulty absorbing B12 without showing signs of pernicious anemia.
S-adenosylmethionine is what most people know to be called Serotonin, and is an important neurotransmitter in the brain. B12 is detrimental to the manufacture of serotonin, so therefore has a very large role in the maintaining of both emotional and mental health.
It is a fairly common fact that those who suffer from depression have a problem with serotonin. Without adequate serotonin levels a person will have trouble with controlling their emotions, moodiness, sexual arousal, body temperature, skin problems, insomnia and headaches. No matter how hard someone with low serotonin levels tries to lift their mood, the poor communication between the cells will prevent it from being possible. As soon as these symptoms are noticed, a supplement should be introduced in the diet.
Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies can both contribute to the onset of serious depression. Many studies have been conducted that have proven supplementing B12 and folic acid simultaneously in depression patients along with a good dietary intake will elevate moods dramatically. It is for this reason vitamin B12 and folic acid are considered to be anti-depressant vitamins.
Mental health is detrimental to leading a happy life, and neurotransmitters being produced at the right levels are a huge part of that. In order to make the neurotransmitters, the brain must have adequate B12, which has to come from your dietary intake. Eat healthy foods high in vitamin B and definitely consider taking a good B supplement that has all the B vitamins and folate.

What Is Actually Organic Whole Food Vitamin Supplement?

by Eddy Kong

As more and more people beginning to live a a hectic lifestyle, with millions and millions of people spending billions and billions of dollars on vitamin supplements every stage.
In just 2004 to 2007, more than $20.6 billion dollars was spent on this phenomenon. Many people think they are preventing heart disease or cancer by popping every vitamin supplement they can get their hands on. What many fail to realize, however, is that with the water soluble vitamins (B vitamins and vitamin C), whatever is not used is eliminated each day. Stocking up on these vitamins therefore, is not possible.
As mentioned, as more people do not have time for a healthy and balanced diet. Processed foods fail to ensure the daily ratio of vitamins necessary for keeping healthy. Given the highly polluted environment we live in and all the unhealthy food we consume, an organic food supplement can significantly improve our state of health.
Why we need to increase our organic whole food vitamin supplement intake?
The reason is simply that in the modern society of ours, very few people follow a correct diet and have 6-8 servings of whole food, such as grains, seeds, nuts and vegetables, every day. It seems like the present trend is consuming processed food and taking synthetic vitamins to supplement your diet. However, this is not the best way to secure a balanced diet and it can even have bad long-term effects on your health.
You could increase your daily intake of organic whole food health supplement instead. Eating vitamin and mineral-rich food, such as nuts, whole grains and seeds are a good way of completing your diet with natural vitamins, enzymes and minerals.
The difference between synthetic vitamins vs organic health supplements
Most vitamin supplements you can purchase today are made from synthetic ingredients. These are chemical substances which have been produced in laboratories to fake the molecular structure of natural vitamins.
Your body is built to absorb nutritional substances from food. Therefore, most health care professionals recommend an organic health food supplement and taking your daily vitamins from whole food, not synthetics supplements.
Earth minerals vs homeopathic minerals:
Commercial supplements aimed to increase your vitamin and mineral intake use minerals such as calcium carbonate, calcium citrate and other derivates, derived from sea shells, rocks or coral. On the other hand, an organic vitamin supplement contains a mineral-rich food source along with homeopathic mineral ingredients. All these vitamins are much easier to absorb and assimilate by the human body.
What are the benefits of an organic health supplements?
1) These supplements have no synthetic or isolate ingredients.2) They contain only complete whole food vitamins.3) These supplements do not have any sea shell, rock or coral derived minerals.4) Organic whole food vitamin supplements include homeopathic minerals.5) They increase the intake of whole foods, such as seeds, nuts and grains.6) They do not include any chemical, additive or synthetic ingredients.7) They have a lacto-vegetarian formula.
In conclusion, an organic whole food vitamin supplement can be very effective in ensuring a healthy diet and prevent vitamin deficiencies, alongside all the symptoms that come along.
After knowing what is actually organic whole food health supplements, and alongside this little information may be enough for you to choose your supplements more carefully and to consume more or less. Earlier you are going to swallow any type of vitamin health food, you need to first consult your doctor.
However, many people sometimes tend to forget the quality and quantity of popping these supplements, without realizing the harmful effects of over-consumption it, level while various kinds of these can treat chronic diseases.
Therefore, without a proper understanding of using organic whole food health supplements to treat many chronic diseases, there will not be much disease free lifestyle to craving for.
Apply effective tips as being highlighted here, together alongside an thorough understanding of vitamin supplements is important so that you enjoy your life once again.

Vitamin Overdose

by AINIYAH AZMI , MD

Vitamins and minerals are essential, in a very small amount; for healthy growth
and development. They cannot be synthesized in the body. The body only
utilizes them without breaking them down, which is the reason why they are
only required in "small amounts".
Vitamins and nutrients are often regarded as wonder nutrients and are thus
normally believed to be free from side effects. However vitamin overdose may
cause discomfort and other potentially serious damage to the body.
Vitamins are usually separated into water-soluble (e.g., the B vitamins,
vitamin C) and fat-soluble (e.g., vitamins A, D, E, K) groups.
Vitamins overdose of vitamin B and C are excreted in the body but fat-soluble
vitamin overdose tend to accumulate and eventually cause poisoning when
high levels of concentration in the body have been reached.

Each vitamin also has specific symptoms associated with its vitamin
overdose. The good news is that morbidity and mortality from pure vitamins
overdose are rare. One study of acute or chronic vitamin overdoses, with more
than 40,000 exposures, reported 1 death and 8 major adverse outcomes.
Vitamin A overdose can cause headache, nausea, diarrhea, dry itchy skin,
hair loss and loss of appetite. Fatigue and irregular menstruation are common.
In extreme this vitamin overdose there can be bone pain and enlargement of
liver and spleen. High doses of beta carotene may turn the skin yellowish
orange. Meanwhile, vitamin A overdose in pregnancy may lead to birth defects.
Vitamin D overdose may lead to calcium deposits in soft tissues, blood
vessels walls and kidneys. In children this will cause growth
retardation.Musculoskeletal effects include pain and tenderness, particularly in
the long bones of the upper and lower extremities, which may be exacerbated
by exercise; epiphyseal capping and premature epiphyseal closure, may occur
in children. Neurological effects include blurred vision and frontal headache,
craniotabes in children, or bulging fontanelle in infants.
Chronic vitamin D overdose effects include the above symptoms and
constipation, anorexia, polydipsia, polyuria, backache, hyperlipidemia, and
hypercalcemia followed by hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias.

Vitamin E overdose causes nausea, headache, fatigue, easy bruising and
bleeding muscle weakness, and creatinuria.Chronic vitamin E overdose effects
include all of the above, suppression of other antioxidants, and increased risk of
hemorrhagic stroke.
Vitamin K overdose typically associated with formula-fed infants or those
receiving synthetic vitamin K-3 (menadione) injections. Because of its toxicity,
menadione is no longer used for treatment of vitamin K deficiency. Effects may
include jaundice in newborns, hemolytic anemia, and hyperbilirubinemia.

Most adults can obtain enough vitamins by eating a well-balanced diet. It
has, however, become increasingly common for people to take vitamins at
levels far greater than the recommended dietary allowance RDA.
Balanced amounts of each and every vitamin in the body should be properly
followed, as an excessive in take of one vitamin can adversely affect the body's
use of another vitamin even though the second vitamin is present in normal
amounts.
For instance, deficiency in vitamin K is attributed by large amounts of
vitamin E. Vitamin E overdose changes the body's need for vitamin K to the
point of causing vitamin K deficiency. Vitamins and minerals function as
partners and technically termed as "cofactors" in the metabolism of products in
the bodyFor more info visit onlinenaturalvitamins.com

Know Where To Get Quality Vegetarian Vitamin Supplement facts

by Eddy Kong

In this modern world, there are more and more food-related health problems. That is why, many people are turning towards having more vegetables on their dinner tables.
In fact, many have switch from meat-eating diets to vegetarian diets. There are many people stating that they are plant-eaters, but in actual fact there is not really a single vegetarian diet. Why is that so? I will share more as you read this article.
What are the 4 basic types of vegetarian diets?
#1 Food from plants mainly vegetables, fruits, legumes, seeds, grains and nuts is sometimes called a total vegetarian or vegan diet to many
#2 Another type of vegetarian diets includes not only plant foods, but also cheese and other dairy products. This is called lacto-vegetarian diet.
#3 You will be surprised people whom are consuming eggs are calling themselves vegetarian. They are having ovo-lactovegetarian or lacto-ovovegetarian diet.
#4 There are people who are called semi-vegetarian. These people don't eat red meat, but include fish and chicken in their diet.
Are they really healthy?
In fact, the majority of vegetarian diets are low in animal products, which are lower in cholesterol, total fat and saturated fat compared to normal diets.
According to medical studies, vegetarians have a lower risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and some types of cancer, as compares to people who are meat-eaters.
These type of vege-eating habits can be very healthy if carefully planned so that they include all the necessary nutrients in reasonable amounts. However, they can also be too high in calories or lack some important nutritional substances.
What about vegetarian vitamins?
If you're a plant-eater, you can assure that you have more than enough nutrients in your body by taking the following organic vitamins:
#1 Where to get proteins?
You don't necessarily have to eat animal products to ensure the correct amount of proteins in your body. Proteins can be found in plants too. However, make sure that your diet is varied and contains enough calories for your daily energy needs.
You can also depend on a good organic vitamin supplement. Vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds are also rich in amino-acids. However, you don't have to combine all these foods in one meal. Soy is also just as good in proteins as animal stuffs. You can take all the necessary amount of proteins just from soy.
#2 Where are the iron?
Vegetarians run a higher risk of having iron deficiencies, as the main sources of iron are liver, read meat and egg yolk. However, iron is also found in spinach, dried beans, dried fruits and brewer's east. A vegetarian supplement can also help increase the iron level in your body.
#3 What about vitamin B12?
Animal products are the only natural source for this vitamin. Therefore, vegans need to take a vegetarian vitamin supplement to prevent vitamin B12 deficiencies. However, a little amounts of vitamin B12 can also be found in fortified cereals, nutritional yeast, soy beverages and other foods.
#4 Is vitamin D good?
Vegetarians have to use vegetarian supplement intakes to ensure a proper vitamin D level in their body, especially if they don't get enough sunlight.
#5 Where to find calcium in vegetables?
Medical studies have shown that vegetarian diets usually lead to the absorption and retaining of more calcium. Calcium is found in vegetable greens, such as kale, spinach and broccoli, legumes and soy.
#6 Zinc?
Zinc is an essential substance for ensuring development and growth. Grains, legumes, nuts and shellfish are great sources of zinc. If you take an organic vitamin supplement, make sure that it doesn't contain over 15-18 mg of zinc. Such supplement with 50 mg of zinc may decrease the level of HDL cholesterol, which is good for the human body.
Although vegetarian diets are generally healthier than non-vegetarian ones, taking a good vegetarian vitamin supplement may help keep your body healthy. So, take action right now to improve your health even further.
Without a proper understanding of using and getting quality vegetarian vitamin supplements to treat many chronic diseases, there will not be much disease free lifestyle to craving for.
Applying this effective tips as being highlighted here, together with an thorough understanding of vitamin supplements is important so that you enjoy your life once again.

Review of A Cancer Prevention Vitamin

by Keith Standifer

Have we discovered a cancer prevention vitamin? Are cancer prevention vitamins really possible? Is the cancer prevention vitamin here?
New studies show we just might have! Some forms of cancer may be preventable with the use of a cancer prevention vitamin. Hardly any family in the United States has NOT had a family member die because of cancer. This could change with the addition of this cancer prevention vitamin to our daily diets.
There are two studies that have been conducted using very sophisticated analysis which revealed that we are close to having a cancer prevention vitamin. Almost half of the cases of breast cancer and almost two thirds of colorectal cancer, in the United States, have been helped with what appears to be the cancer prevention vitamin, Vitamin D, (25-hydroxyvitamin D).
The data from the breast cancer study showed individuals with the highest blood levels of 25(OH)D HAD the lowest risk factors for cancer. Wouldn't it be great if we could prevent most breast cancers? The researchers for this cancer prevention vitamin divided the data from two studies into five equal groups from the lowest blood levels of 25(H)D to the highest level of 25(OH)D. The data showing whether or not the individuals developed cancer was also included with these studies. This is strong evidence that we are closer to developing a cancer prevention vitamin for breast cancer.
The cancer prevention vitamin data from the colorectal study was an analysis of five studies relating to 25(OH)D with risk of colon cancer. All these studies involved subjects with a risk of colon cancer and explored the association of blood levels of 25(OH)D. The levels were then checked 25 years later for the development of colorectal cancer.
According to one of the doctors involved in the study of the cancer prevention vitamin stated, "We project a two-thirds reduction in incidence with serum levels ... which corresponds to a daily intake of 2,000 IU of vitamin D3. This would be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and 10 to 15 minutes per day in the sun."
We have several sources of vitamin D3 (possibly THE cancer prevention vitamin) in our daily routine. We get vitamin D3 through exposure of the skin to sunlight, or ultraviolet B, our diet, and with nutritional supplements. (It is important to note here that the researchers underscored the importance of limiting sun exposure such that the skin does not change color (tan) or burn.) If you are sensitivity to sunlight, or you or a personal or family has a history of nonmelanoma skin cancer, any amount of extra sun exposure would be inadvisable. Therefore a cancer prevention vitamin may be taken in higher dose for those how have this sensitivity. That cancer prevention vitamin is easily available in some vitamin supplements.
Analysis of the colorectal cancer study had shown that in 2006 that a low dose of vitamin D (cancer prevention vitamin) didn't protect against colorectal cancer within seven years of follow-up. However, the researchers wrote, the analysis did show that a higher dose (of cancer prevention vitamin) may reduce its incidence.
I am not a doctor so please consult your healthcare provider.

What About Vitamin Dietary Supplement Facts That Everyone Needs To Know

by Eddy Kong

With more and more people wanting to take more dietary pills, the need to be aware of the essentials is ever-growing important. In fact, dietary supplements or complements are taking more and more shelf space in the stores and theyre also available all over the internet.
What are the kinds of dietary complements to look for?
There are various kinds of dietary complements, namely mineral supplements and herbal supplements. Lets look at mainly dietary complement to be aware of when is it necessary.
Before we take a closer explore at dietary supplements. Lets first examine at a couple of the fat soluble vitamins. These are vitamin A, D, E and K. Since they are fat soluble, they are held in reserve in the body until they are required.
The role of Vitamin A.
This vitamin has a tremendous job to do for our bodies. It helps our immune system fight infection, its critical for bone growth and it is considerable to the fitness of our vision and skin. We take in vitamin A when we consume milk, eggs and cereal fortified with vitamin A. It can also be present found in liver, cheese and some products.
What is vitamin A deficiency?
This type of deficiency is rarely seen in the United States but in developing countries replete with malnourished children, there is widespread blindness and infection as a result of a lack of Vitamin A.
This vitamin toxicity can happen when there is a buildup of vitamin A, which seldom occurs through dietary intake but more commonly through the use of supplements as excess vitamin A is stored in the liver. This can bring about birth defects and central nervous system disorders. It can also cause liver damage and surprisingly, osteoporosis.
Is this the answer?
A vitamin dietary supplement may not always hold the answer we are looking for. Its distinctive to understand what duty the different vitamins act as in our overall fitness and to understand how greatly of each of the vitamins our bodies need.
If we truly need a vitamin dietary supplement, it becomes something of value to our health but it can also persist detrimental to our vitality to take too great deal of a good thing.
Some medical conditions make it difficult for our bodies to absorb certain vitamins so a vitamin dietary supplement certainly has an distinctive part to play when it is truly needed.
Vitamin K is another effective vitamin for our bodies as it aids in the clotting of the blood. A incompetence in this vitamin can persist very dangerous as it can lead to bleeding and even hemorrhaging.
Yet this is another vitamin that we can get comfortable of in our daily diet without resorting to taking a vitamin dietary supplement.
Another thing to consider: Our bodies can stand 500 times the RDA of vitamin K as long as it comes from food yet that is not the case for synthetic vitamin K. We can reach toxic levels by taking too much of this vitamin dietary supplement.
We can consult with our physicians to be sure we are getting enough of the vitamins that we need and to see if we might need a vitamin dietary supplement.
However, without a proper understanding of using and getting quality dietary vitamin supplements to treat many chronic diseases, we might now able to enjoy much disease-free lifestyle.
Therefore, by applying this effective tips as being highlighted here, together with an thorough understanding of vitamin supplements is important so that you enjoy your life once again.

vitamin supplementsTHAT WORK for the Atkins diabetic diet

by Eddy Kong

There are millions of overweight people. They are looking for various ways to lose weight. They turned to various slimming, dieting programs or evenly exercise programs. However, there is one way that everybody turn to is using the Atkins dieting
***Fat Loss 4 Idiots - *Brand New Price!
There are many men and women believe that a good dieting system would intentionally prevent us from consuming foods rich in the vitamins and nutrients and at the same time these vitamins products are constantly promoting their brand name. It is very irony, and often the answer is weird and NO!, right?
They constantly brand their own supplements to replace those very nutrients. Yet this is what Dr. Atkins is telling us when he is actually showing not at the most the effective Atkins dietary but the having vitamin supplements for the Atkins diabetic diet.
The Atkins high-vitamin diet does not reach day after day values for some of the vitamins and minerals that we need every day but provides 400% of some of the day by day values. For example, in an analysis of sample Atkins Diets during the introduction period, at least 37% of the everyday value for calcium was provided and during the same periodic 86% of the iron was provided.
Obviously, Dr. Atkins thought that was fine because in conjunction with the low-salt diet you are assumed to be found taking the vitamin complement for the Atkins macrobiotic diet Even the tablets do without not emmebbed calcium, though. You will have to eat up one of those delicious Atkins bars to get your everyday values of calcium.
At the maintenance stage of the soft diet you would be met with getting over 400% of the regularly values for vitamin C, but during the induction duration only 33%. What kind of sense does this make? As a matter of fact, many people are ignoring this fact and continue to consume such nutritionals.
Are you willing to bet with me?
I am willing to bet that if someone took the list of normal foods we are supposed to consume to get the RDA of vitamins and minerals and composed a dietary with all of those values, that the dieting public would scoop it up. What is so hard about merely nourishing a balanced dieting Why do we have to go to such ill-advised extremes?
It would have been found skeptical and hard to believe of any diabetic diet that included with it a recommendation to consume vitamin and mineral supplements. It just sounds too soon hokey to tell people not eat the foods that contain the vitamins and minerals that we need but instead take them in nutritional form and please buy them from me!
If you are going on only this dietary you are going to need a vitamin supplement for the Atkins dieting. Even then though, you are not getting all the vitamins and minerals you need on a daily basis and far too much of some like cholesterol and protein.
The real key in any dietary is balance. Unless you have a medical condition that prevents the absorption of some vitamins you most likely won't need supplements. Do check with your doctor though before receiving a vitamin supplement for the Atkins food or any other high-vitamin diet - vitamin supplement for the Atkins Diet.
Besides knowing the pros and cons of having vitamin supplements for the Atkins Diet, alongside with this little information may be enough for you to choose your supplements more carefully and to consume moderately. However, there are many people sometimes tend to forget the quanlity of popping these pills, without realizing the harmful effects of over-consumption of these supplements, level while various kinds of supplements can treat chronic diseases.

What You Should Know Regarding Natural Vitamin Supplements

by Melissa Magnus

The human body needs a variety of vital vitamins to aid it to function properly. Most individuals do not obtain everything they require from their diet so they choose to take a nutritional vitamin supplement every day. This is a good way to make certain you do not suffer from a vitamin deficiency. Your physician can help you to recognize the right type of vitamin supplement for you to take. You shouldn't make the choice on your own because a number of the natural vitamin supplements out there are capable of being harmful if you consume an excess of them. You need a medical doctor or a health professional to identify which vitamin supplement is appropriate for you.
A couple groups of people that may have a higher need for natural vitamin supplements include:
Vegetarians quite often have to take vitamin supplements due to the fact that they do not obtain the vitamins necessary that originate from animal products. On the other hand, various vitamin supplements truly do have animal products subsequently vegetarians need to read the labels closely. Just keep in mind that the majority of the synthetic vitamin supplements do not have animal products.
Some young children ought to take vitamin supplements as well because they don't consume a large variety of foods yet. The daily vitamin supplements can help children to prevent vitamin deficiencies.
Women who breastfeed offer their children the finest resource of nutrients available, but that isn't an option for every woman. A large amount of the baby milk formulas on the market contain adequate vitamins in them as well so mothers who do not nurse can still provide their babies the vitamins and nutrients they require. One vitamin that most formulas contain that nursed babies may be lacking is Vitamin D. Therefore talk to your physician concerning supplementing with Vitamin D if you are solely breastfeeding.
The elderly commonly endure a lack of vitamins in their diet as do those with various diseases and sicknesses. A vitamin supplement can help compensate for what they might be missing from their standard diet. It is imperative to get the appropriate vitamins and minerals each day so that your body is able to operate at its peak.
If you experience a few fears, do not hesitate to talk to a physician or health professional. He or she will be available to guide you and answer all fears you experience in regards to the supplemental requirements of yourself or your child.

5 Reasons Why You Should Take Vitamin, Mineral And Antioxidant Supplements

by Miko Matics

There is a vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplement store in almost every shopping mall in the United States. We can also find vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplement shelves in almost every super market. More and more people are taking food supplements today.
But there are quite a few people who still refuse to take vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplements. They think that their diet is good enough and that they do not need to take any supplements. Theoretically what they are saying may be true, but in reality it is not possible to obtain all your nutritional needs from just the food you consume.
Here are 5 reasons why vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplements are necessary in our daily life:
1.Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet every day is a difficult task.
The USDA Food Consumption Survey discovered that only 3 % of those surveyed actually ate healthful and balanced diets. And no one met the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances - which are set by the U. S. government about daily intakes.) consumption of vitamins and minerals.
2.The food you eat now does not contain the same amount of nutrition as it did in the past.
The nutrients in a soil have been exhausted over the years and the vegetables and fruits grown on the farm have been loosing its nutritious values. Therefore, the same amount of broccoli, for instance, contains less calcium and vitamin C than it did 50 years ago.
3.The over processed and preservative added food removes important nutrients.
Consuming even a very good diet is not sufficient if most of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals in our food are diminished by over processing and adding preservatives.
4.The RDA is only the lowest level of nutrient intakes that will prevent deficiencies in apparently healthy human beings.
The RDA was developed originally to help people reduce the rates of contracting severe nutritional deficiencies, like scurvy, rickets, beriberi and so forth which are rarely seen in our modern world. Instead, what we should be concerned with in this industrialized world are the degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis and so forth. In order to prevent the degenerative diseases, we need to consume every day the optimal level of nutrients, beyond the RDA recommended level.
5.Complete nutritional intake is necessary for optimal health.
Using scientifically researched, complete and balanced, and quality nutritional supplements assures the necessary dietary intake for optimal health.
Choosing the quality vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplements with safety, balance, completeness and potency in mind will help apparently healthy people stay healthy while lowering the provability of contracting degenerative diseases and enjoying a healthier and longer life.

Reasons for Taking Vitamin Supplements

by Nick Mutt

Vitamins are vital for the proper functioning of the body. Fruits and vegetables you eat are the major sources of vitamins. So in order to get the right amount of vitamins, trace elements and essential fatty acids, a balanced diet of nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, wheat, and dairy products should be implemented into your daily diet. If you don't follow this routine, most likely you would have some kind of vitamin or mineral deficiency. So to fill this gap you need vitamin supplements.
Vegetarians are often deficient in certain vitamins that are only found in animal products. So they need to take supplements to avoid becoming deficient in these vitamins. Children will often need a vitamin supplement because some children do not eat a sufficient variety of foods and may need a vitamin supplement to compensate for this natural deficiency.
Many times it is seen that women do not breastfeed their babies due to certain reasons. So the babies must be given proper vitamin supplement. Their parents should consult to some health specialist before giving any supplements to their babies. However, most baby milk formulas have added vitamins so no additional supplement is needed.
Often the elderly and those persons suffering from certain illnesses may need to take a vitamin supplement. These individuals may be unable to consume the recommended daily vitamin allowance through their dietary intake, so supplements may be needed.
Sometimes due to your busy lifestyle you are not able to take the right amount of nutritious foods on a daily basis. So in this type of circumstances vitamin supplements are very beneficial.
You must choose the right vitamin supplement based on your need and deficiency. When taken responsibly, vitamin supplements are able to supply your body with the essential nutrients it requires in order to maintain a healthy life.

Treating Eczema With Vitamin E

by Judy Wellsworth

Conditions such as eczema are closely linked to vitamin deficiency and related dietary problems. This means that, according to research, it is possible to improve the symptoms of eczema by increasing intake of Vitamin E, which works by reducing the over activity of the immune system which is responsible for the condition. Vitamin E is present in a number of foods, including eggs and vegetables. All in all, it is important to ensure a healthy balanced diet to obtain the correct vitamin intake. Vitamin E, in addition to all other vitamins in our diet is imperative for the health and well being of our bodies. For this reason alone vitamin E is an essential component of any diet.
Vitamin E is thought to have wide-ranging effects on the body and general health. It has been linked by numerous clinical trials to reducing the chances of heart disease and strokes, as well as a number of cancers, based primarily on its anti-oxidizing properties. Additionally, it is thought that it may also improve the condition of those suffering from arthritis and various respiratory conditions. It has also been proven to counter the effect of toxins encountered during the course of daily life, and is thought to be fantastic for cleansing the body generally. It is also thought to play a significant part in a number of other conditions, ranging from diabetes to cataracts, making it an all round useful addition to any diet.
Vitamin E is particularly useful to treat infants and other young children that suffer from eczema and cradle cap, largely as a result of its safe, natural composition. There are a number of topical creams and ointments based on vitamin E which are specifically designed for treating eczema and other related skin disorders. Most specialists would recommend vitamin E based treatments as the number one option for infants and children with skin problems, and as a very viable option for adults suffering from this type of condition. Many adults suffering from eczema and related conditions also use vitamin E-based treatments as they have many benefits. Vitamin E keeps the skin moisturized which helps prevent the skin from drying and therefore reduces the need for itching. Additionally, its antioxidant properties make it a firm favorite for a number of adults suffering from these conditions.
By far the best method of absorbing vitamin E is through eating the correct foods. Although it is possible to take vitamin supplements to increase your vitamin E intake, it is much more efficient if you eat vitamin E rich foods, natural is better, right? Additionally, you should always bear in mind that excessive consumption can cause problems, as with all vitamins and may even be toxic in some cases.

Amount of Taking Vitamin C

by Hamoon Arbabi

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a weak acid that aids in various metabolic process and helps prevent disease. It is also an antioxidant, eliminating free radicals which cause cell damage and impair the immune system.
Your body can't store vitamin C or make it, so you need to try and get some every day. But how much should we take?
Vitamin C deficiency
Vitamin C deficiency in humans leads to scurvy. Early symptoms in adults include fatigue, weakness, aching joints and muscles. In later stages, scurvy is characterized by anemia, bleeding from the gums, petechial and sheet hemorrhages, and delayed wound healing.
Scientists say that at least 25 mg. of vitamin C per day is essential and minimum for body. Eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day will provide enough vitamin C and other important vitamins and fiber.
How much should we take?
As above said, vitamin C has to be consumed daily because the body does not store it. But this vitamin is hard to over consume because the body just expels what it doesn't need!
There are different standards on the required dose of vitamin C. The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends 40 mg per day, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 45 mg per day, and the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) recommends 60 to 95 mg per day. Adolescents, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and smokers may need higher daily doses.
Pediatricians recommend that children should consume at least 30 - 45 mg. of vitamin C per day. This is the minimum requirement. Parents should check with their own Pediatrician to confirm the requirement or special needs for their children. Children with asthma or other health problems may require a higher consumption of Vitamin C.
Mega doses
Mega doses of 1000 mcg or more should be avoided if you suffer from kidney stones, since it may worsen the condition.
Large doses of vitamin C can cause indigestion, especially when taken with an empty stomach. Diarrhea can also result from doses of five to 25 grams in healthy patients and over 300 grams in those with AIDS or cancer. This is usually harmless and can easily be relieved by reducing the dose. Parenteral (injected) vitamin C can cause faintness or dizziness. Since vitamin C increases iron absorption, iron poisoning may occur in patients taking iron supplements. Other common side effects are headache, flushing or redness, side or lower back pain, and nausea.
Apart from this, vitamin C is very safe. The body can readily excrete excesses in urine, since it is a water-soluble vitamin. So the recommended amount of vitamin C for most healthy people is 60mg/day.

Benefits of Taking Vitamin C

by Hamoon Arbabi

Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient that plays vital roles in keeping you healthy. It is also known as ascorbic acid.
Vitamin C is found in citrus fruit like oranges and lemons as well as other fresh fruits like berries and melons. Vegetables such as tomatoes, broccoli and potatoes are also great sources of vitamin C.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and stop them from causing damage.
Vitamin C commonly thought of mainly in prevention of colds, flu and scarlet fever, is being rediscovered for help in allergies. In various controlled studies, vitamin C has been used with much success in high doses to eradicate specific allergies. With such achievement, vitamin C is now being seen as a big help to the body as it fights allergies.
Vitamin C helps to reduce the level of antihistamines in the body. When you have an allergic reaction, your body's immune system reacts by producing an enormous amount of antihistamines to fight the aberrant allergen. It's the histamines that cause all of the various types of irritation and inflammation that make us uncomfortable or that could kill us.
Vitamin C can slow down the reaction giving you time to get medical attention in the event of a serious reaction.
It's known for helping to fight germs and cancer, but it's not solely responsible for a healthy immune system. Vitamin C is also vital for the production of collagen, the connective tissue that keeps muscles, skin, and other tissues, including bone, healthy and is a very powerful antioxidant that helps ward off cellular damage.
This vitamin along with vitamin E protects the eyes against cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins Eye Institute reported recently that taking supplemental vitamin C, E, and beta carotene along with zinc reduced by 25% the affects of age related macular degeneration-a condition that destroys the central vision usually in the elderly.
Vitamin C is also effective against acne, Addison's disease, stress, dry skin, bed sores, jaundice, gangrene, skin itching, prickly heat, rashes, hematoma, wrinkles and shingles.

Eye Supplements - Beyond Vitamin A

by Rebecca Prescott

The eyes are something that many people take for granted, until disease or injury start to affect them, at which point your whole life can be seriously affected. Of course, there are some things, such as accidents and injuries, that can impact your eyes and will require specialist treatment. And in some cases there is nothing that can be done about problems that affect the eyes, such as genetic problems. However, we can look after our optical health in a number of other ways, and one important factor that can help to maintain them is nutrition.
There are a number of things that can affect the health of our eyes, some of which are out of our control and others that we can try and avoid. Some things that potentially increase the risk of eye problems include age, obesity, smoking, excessive exposure to sunlight, and even gender.
Whilst some people will be more at risk than others when it comes to poor eye health, it has been proven that nutrition does play an important role in the health of our vision, and this is therefore something that should be taken into account if you're interested in preventing age related deterioration.
Studies have shown that certain foods contain antioxidants that can are particularly beneficial for our eyes. However, not everyone manages to eat as much fresh produce as they should to get these benefits. Often a busy lifestyle or other factors can affect the ability to eat a balanced diet. However, the wide range of vitamin supplements that are on the market today have made it easier for consumers to get their recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals, although those taking supplements should still try and eat as well as they can in order to maximize the benefits.
Some important supplements that have been identified in relation to eye health are vitamins A, C, and E. These are the antioxidant vitamins.
Vitamin A is well known for its' role in night vision, but it is also important for preventing night blindness is pregnant women, and the health of our skin, hair and mucous membranes. It is found in animal products like liver, whole eggs, and milk.
Vitamin C helps reduce the risk of developing glaucoma, macular degeneration or cataracts. Bioflavanoids are available in combination with vitamin C in some supplements, and this is because they help the body absorb it. Vitamin E also helps reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
Other supplements that contribute to eye health include beta carotene, lutein, zinc oxide, selenium, and cupric oxide. Lutein is not as well known as some other supplements, but it is central to eye health. It is found in the retina, eye lens, and macula. People who smoke should be careful they get enough lutein, as smoking can affect its' levels.
Smokers should also be aware that some studies have found that some of those participating who took beta carotene supplements and smoked were at risk of several diseases. These were only small studies however, but care should still be taken.
Eye supplements are a convenient way to get these nutrients, and often contain herbal preparations like bilberry. However, you should remember that exceeding the recommended doses can lead to side effects, so be aware of the total amount of each nutrient you are taking from multivitamins and any other supplements. This is of particular importance with fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A, though if you are not taking high doses of any vitamins you should be alright.

The Role Of Vitamin B3 Niacin

by Barion Smith

Vitamin B3 niacin is an essential vitamin for your body, and it is just one of the eight water soluble types of B vitamins. Nearly all of the B vitamin classes will help the body convert carbohydrates into sugar or glucose, which can then be burned to produce energy. Also known as complex B vitamins, B3 niacin are essential in helping the body break down protein and fat.
Complex B vitamins also play an important role with maintaining muscle tone within the digestive tract, along with the health of the skin, nervous system, live, eyes, hair, and mouth. Even though a lot of people associate creative with the aspect of muscles and muscle tone, vitamin B3 niacin is as equally important - if not more important.
B3 niacin is also important with getting harmful or toxic chemicals out of the body. It can also help the body produce different sex and stress related hormones within the adrenal glands, among other parts of the body. The vitamin is also useful for helping with sexual dysfunction as well. This can be great news for those who have problems with pleasing their mate.
Also very effective with improving circulation, B3 niacin can also help to reduce cholesterol levels found in the blood. Even though vitamin B3 niacin is great as a stand alone supplement, it should also consumed with foods that contain protein, due to the fact that the body is able to convert the amino acid known as tryptophan into niacin.
The higher doses of B3 niacin, which are available only through prescription, have been proven to prevent and also improve a variety of different symptoms and ailments. Due to the high risk of toxicity, individuals should always consult with a doctor first, before they decide to start higher doses of B3 niacin. Detox diets are used to refer to diets, herbs, and other methods of removing environmental and dietary toxins from the body for general health.
There are also niacin skin care products that are being developed as well, which contain anti-aging products, helping to treat acne and also aid in the prevention of skin cancer. A lot of dermatologists expect that these products will become really popular over the next several years. Even though they are still in development stages, research has proven them to be very effective when compared to the other types of products. More on detox diets at http://www.diet-detox.info
The best sources for vitamin B3 niacin include beef, pork, turkey, beets, veal, fish, chicken, salmon, tuna, and peanuts. You can also get supplements that contain B3 niacin as well, which can give your body the amounts it needs. This is a very important vitamin, as it does a lot more for the body than most think. By consuming foods that contain it or taking the proper supplements - youll get the amount of B vitamins that your body needs on a daily basis.

It's many times stronger than Vitamin C and has numerous health benefits.

by Brad chase

Researchers are now finding that grape seed extract is an antioxidant cocktail that is many times stronger than its popular counterparts.
Grape seed extract contains powerful antioxidants called proanthocyanidins. The antioxidant power of proanthocyanidins is many times stronger than vitamin C and vitamin E. Antioxidants neutralize harmful radicals (toxic byproducts of metabolic functions) and protect against inflammation, cancer, and age-related diseases. Now research reports that grape seed extract may help prevent skin cancer.
The study, presented at the 223rd annual meeting of the American Chemical Society on April 8, 2007, investigated the effects of grape seed extract on mice exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Researchers from the University of Alabama, Birmingham administered a standard diet supplemented with grape seed extract or a standard diet without supplementation to hairless mice. The mice were exposed to UVB radiation.
The researchers found that the mice in the grape seed group had a 35 percent reduction in tumors, compared to the untreated mice. Findings also revealed that the grape seed group had a 78 percent decrease in tumor size and 65 fewer tumors than the untreated mice. Grape seed extract appears to block the suppression of the immune system caused by UV light.
"It suggests that regular consumptions of GSPs (grape seed proanthocyanidins) as a dietary supplement may be beneficial for the prevention of skin cancers," says study chief Santosh K. Katiyar, PhD, in a news release.
By limiting oxidation, a process in which electrons lose a molecule, atom, or ion, grape seed extract may help prevent and treat heart diseases like high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
It has also been shown that the powerful antioxidants found in grape seed extract, proanthocyanidins, strengthen the walls of blood vessels which protects them against damage.
Some studies indicate that you may want to avoid grape seed extract if you are taking antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. The result may lead to uncontrolled bleeding, therefore caution should be exercised when implementing this supplement into your diet. The studies are limited and therefore further research is limited. Discuss grape seed extract with your doctor if you are these medications.
If you are looking for a powerful supplement to take as a part of a healthy diet, consider grape seed extract. The benefits described in the article only begin to reveal its true potential as a free radical scavenger.

Vitamin B - The REAL Benefits

by Luke Burgis

Copyright (c) 2007 Luke Burgis
One of my favorite nods to the benefits of Vitamin B came from Christian Troy of the FX drama Nip/Tuck - when his business partner's teenage son confides in him about his desire to have a threesome with a couple of his high school classmates, Christian, the sex-crazed plastic surgeon, gives him some key advice:
"Sure, I don't have a problem with it. But you'd better take your B-vitamins because it's some tiring stuff."
This is coming from a guy with experience. He's also a doctor, which means he probably knows nothing about B-vitamins or nutrition. As a fictional character, he has no idea what a hangover feels like nor the Ciceric friend that a bottle of B vitamins can make when it's waiting for you on your pillow next to a bottle of warm Gatorade upon returning after a long night of debauchery. No, Christian's knowledge of B-vitamins extends no further than the wacky minds of his writers, and I'm guessing his writers have only had threesomes with a sand wedge in their hands.
Vitamin B is actually a complex of multiple water-soluble vitamins (the only other water soluble vitamin is Vitamin C) that happen to co-exist in the same foods. They've been shown to bolster metabolism, maintain healthy skin and muscle tone, enhance immune and nervous system functions, promote cell growth and division and, of course, may assit in any kind of 'tiring activity' - use your imagination. Together, they're a powerful force.
Foods that contain a substantial amount of B Vitamins include potatoes, bananas, lentils, chili peppers, turkey and tuna. Brewer's yeast is one of the best sources of B vitamins.
The first question most people ask us at Fit Fuel is whether or not to take B vitamins individually or as complex (all B vitamins). Others ask if they can get everything they need through a regular multi-vitamin (which is likely to include the B vitamins). My recommendation would be to simply take a good multi-vitamin (I recommend Jay Robb multi's, which are in gelcap form - a good thing - and contain a generous dosage of B's) so that you have a balanced intake to fuel all of your body's complex functions. B vitamins are chemically distinct vitamins that all play very specific roles within your body.
When you first start taking a B complex, should you choose to target this vitamin group, you'll notice that your urine is bright yellow. This is natural - it's your body's way of disposing of excess vitamins. If you're general healthy, this is inevitable. Very few people need to take extra high dosages of any Vitamin B unless they have a specific ailment. There are many people who hear that Vitamin B12 may help prevent memory loss starts so they start nailing half a bottle a day. It would probably be more effective to order one of the memory aid tools off the QVC infomercial channel, though the excess vitamins are unlikely to do you any harm unless you continue to take them for an extended period of time because you don't look down while you're going or you attribute your colorful stream to a copious amount of way-too-strong lemonade.
And gents - don't bother asking your doctor about a custom B6/B12 doping to help with your performance on dual battlefronts unless his name is Christian Troy.

Is Your Nutrition Enough? Why Vitamin Supplements Are Still Important

by Mario Churchill

It's probably safe to say that we require vitamins from the roots of our hair to the tips of our feet. Vitamins are extremely important organic compounds that our body needs for proper metabolism. That is why no nutrition is considered complete without the vitamins necessary to make our body work. Is it any wonder that the vitamin supplement industry continues to expand?
How vitamins affect our health and nutritionVitamins play a part in all the important functions that occur in our bodies including the formation of blood cells, hormones, chemicals needed in the nervous system and all of our genetic material.
Vitamins do not affect our bodies directly. Instead, they function as catalysts and take effect by combining with the proteins in our bodies to produce active enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for producing chemical reactions in the body. These chemical reactions are all linked. When one commences, it triggers another reaction which triggers another. When a body is vitamin deficient, this chain may break down and cause illness, disease or other conditions that affect the body negatively.
Vitamins also affect our nutrition and can boost the health-giving properties of foods to maximize their effect. All the carbohydrates, fats and proteins we take in the form of food and drinks are enhanced by vitamins.
Two kinds of vitaminsKnowing the two kinds of vitamins will help understand why it's essential that they be maintained at the recommended daily dosage. There are fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins are more easily absorbed by the body with the help of fat-containing food. These vitamins include A, D, E and K. Any excess are stored in the liver, kidneys and body fat.
Water-soluble vitamins are not stored by the body and are excreted through the urine if there are any excess amounts. That is why it's important to replenish the supply on a daily basis. These vitamins include Vitamin C and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, B6 and B12).
Where to find vitaminsVitamins occur naturally in food and you can take advantage of this by maintaining good nutrition on a day-to-day basis. If you are vigilant enough to monitor your daily intake and you're young, there's almost no need for you to take vitamin supplements.
However, as you grow older and the body changes, other factors that are disruptive to your nutrition such as lifestyle changes and unhealthy habit formation makes it necessary to add to your vitamin source with supplements taken in pill form or as fortified food, bars and drinks.
The need for vitamin supplementsFood will remain the best source for vitamins. The only problem is that most of the food we eat and drink today are adulterated by processing methods. Washing, brushing, heating and other cooking and preparation methods reduce the amounts of vitamins contained in the source. That is why even with the best resources and meals, people are still malnourished.
There are also those individuals who are deficient in vitamins not only because of their choice but also because of their lifestyles. Through their choice of nutrition, habits and physical activities, they deplete their stores of vitamins without knowing it. To prevent any problems and correct any deficiency, vitamins are sourced through supplements in the form of pills, tablets, specially formulated food and fortified drinks.

Multiple Vitamin, Omega-3, Coq10, And A Probiotic Are Four Essential Supplements Everyone Should Take For Better Health

by Darrell Miller

Vitamins are substances that are found in foods and are necessary for life. They also allow the body to get through each day. Although some have specific tasks, most work together to provide the body with many health benefits. Vitamins are either fat or water-soluble. Those that are water soluble leave the body quickly while those that are fat-soluble are stored in the liver and fat cells for quite awhile. Some of these fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K. Most people take vitamins to fill nutritional gaps that occur when our diets aren't as good as we'd like to admit. Vitamins should not be taken as a substitute for a healthy diet, as good eating habits should always be the first priority. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is the amount of essential nutrients that is considered to be adequate to meet nutritional needs of almost all healthy people, or the amount to prevent a nutrient deficiency. However, the optimal levels are really a lot higher than 100% of the RDA.
Depending on your age and gender, men and women require different vitamins at different times in their lives, but there are vitamins that men and women of all ages need. Vitamin A lowers cholesterol, improves vision, boosts the immune system, and helps skin and hair. Similarly, vitamin C boosts the immune system, while it heals wounds and makes collagen. Vitamin D helps to build bones and teeth and also prevents colds. Vitamin E protects the skin, lowers blood pressure, heals burns, and also boosts energy. Vitamin K prevents bone loss, and helps with normal blood clotting. The B vitamins, which includes thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, B12, Biotin, and Pantothenic Acid, supports nerve cells, provides energy, lowers cholesterol, reduces homocysteine, burns fat, reduces skin inflammation, and converts sugar and fat into energy. Lastly, Folic acid can help to prevent spinal bifida, increases milk production in nursing mothers, and makes the skin healthier in general.
Minerals help form the structure of our bodies. Without them, our bones could not continue to grow, strengthen, and repair themselves. They help our nerves send and receive signals and allow our muscles to respond properly. They are also very important in normal blood clotting and tissue repair. Any multivitamin that you get needs to have a full range of minerals including calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, sodium, potassium, boron, and vanadium. Iron should be in a supplement for women who are still menstruating, but not for those who aren't. Therefore, minding age and gender-appropriate multiples is something that needs to be considered.
When purchasing a multiple vitamin, it is also important to look for antioxidants from fruit and herbal sources. Lutein and Zeaxanthin support healthy vision. Grape seed extract strengthens veins and arteries, boosts the immune system, and reduces allergic symptoms. Bilberry prevents hardening of arteries and cataracts, and supports retina. Black tea lowers cancer risk and chances of stroke. Cherry fruit strengthens collagen, reduces inflammation, supports tendons and muscles, and also reduces the risk of heart attacks.Although most people are trying to cut fats from their diets, fats aren't necessarily a bad thing. Rather, it's a matter of proportion. Both omega-3 and omega-6 fats need to be consumed to stay healthy. Omega-6 fats can be found in many everyday sources, including doughnuts, vegetable oils, and margarine. We tend to have an abundance of omega-6 fatty acids because foods made or prepared with these ingredients are very popular. Omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, are not found in most diets, but show the most benefits. Some of these benefits include: reducing high blood pressure, lowering bad cholesterol and raising good cholesterol, reducing heart attack risk, reducing risk of stroke, reducing osteoarthritis symptoms, increasing mental focus, helping improve eczema, reducing asthma symptoms, and reducing rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Cancer survival, bipolar disorder, and depression all show promise with treatment from omega-3. Adding more fish to your diet is a good idea for everyone, but not every fish has the high levels of EPA and DHA that are beneficial in omega-3. A fish oil supplement that is mercury-free and naturally-stable can help provide the EPA and DHA that is necessary for people. Make sure that the supplement you choose isn't artificially modified to boost DHA and EPA concentration. Be certain that natural antioxidants such as vitamin E are added to prevent rancidity and make the supplement taste better.
Probiotics, also called "beneficial bacteria", are becoming more and more popular. Acidophilus is one of the best and most researched probiotic bacteria out there right now. It may seem strange, but not all bacteria are bad. Actually, probiotic bacteria are essential for the body so that it can digest food properly and absorb minerals. An imbalance of intestinal bacteria (microflora) is often associated with many diseases from yeast infections to colon cancer. By taking a nutritional supplement or eating foods containing probiotic bacteria, you can help support and modify the composition of the microflora in your large intestine. These microflora assist digestion, protect against disease-causing bacteria, and stimulate the immune system. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria longum have a central role in the intestinal flora and provide many health benefits. Even though it is associated with dairy, Bifidobacteria longum assists in the breakdown of lactose and relieves some of the symptoms of lactose intolerance such as flatulence and bloating. When choosing a probiotic supplement, look for one that contains Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria longum. The supplement should be in a "super-capsule," as regular capsules won't protect the bacteria all the way through the stomach. Similar to foods, look for a freshness date that guarantees the amount of probiotic bacteria at the time of purchase, rather than just at the time of manufacture.
CoQ10, also known as ubiquinone, is a nutrient that can be found in all living cells of the body. Supplementing CoQ10 can: reduce the risk of heart attack, slow effects of parkinson's disease, replenish CoQ10 depletion from statin drug use, decrease high blood pressure, reduce the frequency of migraine headaches, and reduce tumors. CoQ10 also has great antioxidant abilities, as it scoops up free-radicals in the body. There are some major distinctions among CoQ10 products. One being that the product must be scientifically shown to absorb through the digestive tract and move into the mitochondria. Usually chewable and softgel forms are best because they cross the blood/brain barrier. The second major distinction is that the CoQ10 should be in a natural form, rather than a synthetic form. The third distinction is that the supplement should be proven to work. A commercially-available product should be the same formula studied by respected organizations, with documented research. By building up a healthy foundation with a daily multiple, stable fish oil, daily probiotic, and absorbable CoQ10, we can ensure ourselves the basic nutrients needed each day to live a healthier life. All the above listed supplements can be found at your local or internet health food store.

All About Vitamin C

by Gabriel Adams

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an antioxidant vitamin that is water-soluble. The human body is incapable of making its own vitamin C and needs to obtain it through a diet that includes food rich in vitamin C.
Why Vitamin C is important
Vitamin C is vital for the formation of collagen, which is a protein that provides structure to muscle, bone, blood vessels and cartilage. Vitamin C also helps in the efficient absorption of iron and helps heal wounds and burns, strengthens blood vessels, promotes strong bones and teeth, boosts immunity and builds healthy skin and gums.
Vitamin C has been recognized as a highly effective antioxidant. It offers protection to the cells of the body against damage caused by free radicals, which could lead to a host of health problems including heart disease and cancer.
The body's vitamin C requirement increases significantly in case of burns and also during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Effects of Vitamin C Deficiency
Vitamin C deficiency is the main cause of scurvy wherein there is weakening of collagen-containing connective tissue, blood vessels and bone. Symptoms of scurvy include swelling and joint pain, easy bruising and bleeding and loss of hair and teeth.
Where to get Vitamin C
The best way for the body to get its daily requirement is by eating a variety of foods that are known to contain vitamin C. Citrus fruits including oranges and grapefruits, strawberries and sweet red peppers are the richest sources of vitamin C. Other good sources of Vitamin C include guava, papaya, kiwi, broccoli, spinach and green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin C is water soluble and cannot be retained by the body. Hence it is important that the body gets some amount of Vitamin C everyday in order to maintain optimum health.
Retaining vitamin C in foods
Vitamin C is easily lost in foods during storage and cooking. The following precautions can prevent this from happening:Vegetables and fruits should be served and eaten raw whenever possibleMicrowave or boil vegetables containing vitamin C for the minimum required time in the minimum amount of water. Raw vegetables and fruits that are cut should be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Avoid storing or soaking in water as vitamin C gets depleted by dissolving in water.
